Our kidneys keep us healthy by removing wastes from our blood via millions of tiny filters known as nephrons. When these nephrons are damaged, they begin to malfunction. Eventually, there aren’t enough to filter our blood well enough to keep us healthy, and we start to experience chronic kidney disease (CKD) symptoms. However, by the time we notice symptoms, CKD has usually progressed to an advanced stage. In fact, a person’s kidney function can decline by up to 90% before any symptoms appear.
