What tests are included in this screen?

Our Seasonal Respiratory Virus screen includes the following tests:

  • Rapid Covid PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
  • Influenza A & B
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

What is the difference between COVID, Flu, and RSV symptoms?

COVID-19, Influenza (Flu) and RSV are all highly contagious respiratory infections caused by viruses, however, they all slightly differ from each other.

Because all three viruses are so similar, this also means that the symptoms you can experience are almost exactly the same, a test can help identify which virus you are experiencing. But, it seems that one symptom that is unique to COVID-19 is loss of taste and smell.

Symptoms of Flu and COVID-19 include:

  • Fevers
  • Chills
  • Headaches
  • Coughing
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhoea

RSV is more dangerous to infants and the elderly, mimicking the common cold, symptoms often run their course with mild intensity over 1 to 2 weeks. More severe symptoms can include fevers and wheezing.

Why should this test be taken?

This test should be taken if you are worried that you have been infected with one or more of the viruses mentioned, and want to identify which one you are suffering from to better your recovery process.

Can you have multiple viruses at the same time?

It is possible to contract both COVID-19 and flu at the same time, although, there is no evidence of having all three viruses.
