Early problems with your Kidneys can cause symptoms such as tiredness, difficulty sleeping, itchy skin, headaches, muscle cramps. If left untreated then more severe symptoms such as blood in your pee, anaemia, weak bones, swollen ankles, erectile dysfunction (in men) can occur. Early detection and treatment is key. This test conducted at our walk-in clinic looks at how well your kidneys are functioning and how efficiently they are able to clear waste products from within your body. Issues with kidney function such as kidney disease can be identified using this test. If you are suffering from these symptoms then this test may be right for you.

How is the test performed?

Blood tests are performed by drawing blood either from a finger prick or from a vein in your arm, the small blood sample is then collected and tested against a panel of biomarkers.

What exactly are kidney function tests?

Kidney function tests are urine or blood tests that determine how well your kidneys function. The majority of these tests assess glomerular filtration rate (GFR). GFR measures how well your kidneys remove waste from your body.

Why would I require a kidney function test?

Diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension) are two conditions that have an impact on how well the kidneys work. If you have one of these conditions, your doctor may use kidney function tests to monitor your progress. Kidney function tests may also be requested in cases where you are experiencing problems which can be directly associated with your kidneys such as signs of Kidney disease.

What are the signs of kidney disease?

Kidney disease is characterised by a gradual loss of kidney function over time, this can be months or even years. Our kidneys keep us healthy by removing wastes from our blood via millions of tiny filters known as nephrons. When these nephrons are damaged, they begin to malfunction. Eventually, there aren’t enough to filter our blood well enough to keep us healthy, and we start to experience chronic kidney disease (CKD) symptoms. However, by the time we notice symptoms, CKD has usually progressed to an advanced stage. In fact, a person’s kidney function can decline by up to 90% before any symptoms appear.

Symptoms and complications of Kidney disease may include:

  • Weight loss and poor appetite
  • Swollen ankles, feet or hands
  • Shortness of breath
  • Tiredness
  • Blood in your pee (urine)
  • Increased need to pee – particularly at night
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Itchy skin
  • Muscle cramps
  • Feeling sick
  • Headaches
  • erectile dysfunction in men
  • High blood pressure
  • Anaemia (low blood count)
  • Weak bones
  • Poor nutritional health
  • Nerve damage

Why is this test beneficial?

This blood test can allow early diagnosis of kidney problems such as kidney disease and allow treatment intervention to occur for example treatment for diabetes or high blood pressure may be adjusted. Regular testing helps you track your health and any underlying conditions.
